We are especially drawn to the stunning miniature portraits collection at the wonderful Gibbes Museum and love whiling away an afternoon at this cultural gem.
Take note of local artists who are exhibited in the permanent collection–two of particular importance who I personally collect are friends, Jill Hooper and Fletcher Williams.
Full disclosure - I am on the board of Society 1858, a group of young professionals who support the Gibbes through programming, fundraising, and events. I adore this museum and suggest visiting to learn more about the visual culture of the American South and Charleston.
Our little 'Mini Met', The Gibbes was recently beautifully restored Beaux Arts building that houses a premier collection of over 10,000 works of fine art, principally American works, many with a connection to Charleston or the South. Their gift store is a not to be missed spot to find locally made gifts.
The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The Museum connects the city and region’s artistic past to a vibrant contemporary art scene. This is what we believe.
