David Mann, founder and head of New York’s MR Architecture and Décor, (a firm known for straddling the line between both disciplines, and a perennial fixture on AD’s top 100), wanted to use the retrospective as an opportunity for improvement. He wanted his team to assess the work they had done, to discover just what it was they were proud of, and to decide how they could bring these elements to bear on their projects in the future. This deliberate, conscientious thinking, coupled with a certain modesty and collaborative spirit, are exactly what have distinguished MR’s projects to date. These are the qualities that have delivered the firm consistently intelligent, beautiful, and remarkable results, and they are the influence of the firm’s chief, David Mann.

David’s shortlist for Upstate NY

What are you up to these days?

We are currently working on a ground up oceanfront house in the Hamptons, the interior design of the residential units at the 111 Murray Street tower in Tribeca, the gut renovation of a turn of the century townhouse in Brooklyn, the decoration of apartments in Gramercy Park and Hudson Yards, a donor wall for The Center in Greenwich Village, and store design for a new global retail brand.

"I have been known to go to Bonfiglio and Bread in Athens for fresh (just-out-of-the-oven) pastries for my weekend guests."

“Before the shops open, I like to drive any of my guests who are unfamiliar with the area around, to look at some of my favorite Hudson Valley homes.”

"Regan and Smith is a shop that’s wildly eclectic, run by masters of the unexpected, Kevin and Kurt."

"Stop at Ornamentum to browse their gorgeous collection of jewelry that edges towards, and often is, pure art. Store owners Stefan and Laura Friedemann exhibit the work of contemporary European jewelers who are at the cutting edge of their field."

"Vincent has the most sophisticated eye and a passion for large architectural artifacts that, for the most part, are historically and regionally appropriate. These objects are also quite extraordinary."

"Swoon still holds its own as one of the nicest restaurants in Hudson. It’s located in a fairly stripped-back old retail space and is filled with antique furnishings. Maybe because it’s one of the few restaurants that was there when I first started visiting, this place feels like home to me."

"Rural Residence is the nicest gift shop in Hudson, founded by Tim Dunleavy. Its current owner Steven Bluttal has held on to the spirit of what Tim created, but has also made it his own. A few favorite objects I’ve found there are ebony tape measures, [the best] linen blankets, marbleized wrapping paper and the best books on country living."

"Gilded Owl has a more urban Euro-sophisticated edge—Gio Ponti meets eighties Memphis with a decidedly contemporary spin. Andy Goldsborough and Elizabeth Moore have pushed Warren Street into the future with their views on art and design."
